Backflow Prevention

Backflow happens when water flows backward through your plumbing system and contaminates the clean water supply. If you received a notice from your water authority requiring annual backflow testing, you need a certified tester who can perform the inspection, document the results, and file the required report. That’s what we do.

When You Need This Service

Most people contact us for one of two reasons: they received a compliance notice from Aqua PA, the Bucks County Water & Sewer Authority, North Wales Water Authority, or another regional water authority — or they’re a commercial property owner who needs backflow prevention as an ongoing compliance requirement. Annual certified testing is required for properties with irrigation systems, fire suppression systems, swimming pools, boiler connections, and most commercial water connections. If you’ve received a notice and the deadline is approaching, don’t wait. Water authorities track compliance and repeated failures to test can result in service interruption.

What NESP Does

Certified testing. We perform ASSE-certified backflow testing that meets all local water authority requirements. We handle the documentation and file the required reports with the appropriate authority — you don’t need to manage the paperwork.

Installation. If your property requires a backflow preventer that isn’t currently installed — a new irrigation system, a commercial kitchen connection, a fire suppression line — we install the appropriate device for the application.

Repair and replacement. Devices that fail testing need to be repaired or replaced before the system can be certified. We handle that in the same service relationship, without routing you to a separate contractor.

Residential and Commercial

On the residential side, backflow preventers are most commonly required for irrigation systems, swimming pools, sump pump discharge connections, and boiler systems. If you’ve had a sprinkler system installed or a pool added in the past few years and haven’t had backflow testing, check with your water authority — it’s likely required. Our sump pump page covers how those systems can create backflow conditions. On the commercial side, we work with restaurants, medical and dental offices, salons, and any commercial property with chemical connections, non-potable water lines, or fire suppression systems. These properties typically have annual testing requirements built into their operating licenses, and documentation matters.

One Company for Backflow and Everything Else

Most backflow testing is done by specialists who only do backflow. That works for the test — but if the device fails and needs replacement, or if the inspection reveals a related plumbing issue, you’re making another call to another company. We’re a full-service plumbing and HVAC company that also does backflow certification. One relationship handles the test, the repair, and anything else that comes up. We’re a family business, over 30 years in the trades. We hold PA HIC License PA151164 and carry ASSE certification for backflow testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does backflow testing cost?
Certified backflow testing typically runs between $75 and $150 for a standard residential device. Commercial properties with multiple devices or more complex systems run higher. Testing includes documentation and filing with the water authority.
How often is backflow testing required?
Most water authorities in Bucks County and Montgomery County require annual testing. The specific requirement depends on your water authority and the type of connection. If you received a notice, the required frequency will be stated on it. When in doubt, annual testing keeps you in compliance regardless.
Do residential homes need backflow prevention?
Not all of them — but more than most homeowners realize. Any residential property with an irrigation system, a swimming pool, or certain boiler or sump pump configurations is typically required to have a backflow preventer installed and tested annually. If you're not sure whether your property requires it, your water authority can tell you, or call us and we'll help you figure it out.
