Mini-Split Repair

When a mini-split stops working, most homeowners aren’t sure who to call. The company that installed it may be gone. General HVAC companies may not have experience with it. And if this system is your only source of heating or cooling, waiting isn’t really an option. We repair all major brands of ductless systems — Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, LG, Samsung, Rheem — and we do it with the same crew that handles the plumbing side of the job when that’s what’s actually broken.

What You Might Be Experiencing

Water dripping from the indoor unit onto the wall or floor. This is the most common mini-split service call we get, and it’s almost always a clogged condensate drain line. The system produces water as it cools, and that water needs somewhere to go. When the drain line gets blocked — algae, mold buildup, debris — it backs up and comes out of the unit instead. This is a plumbing problem on an HVAC system. A lot of HVAC-only companies will clear the immediate clog and leave. We address the drainage routing that caused it, because if the drain path was poorly installed or pitched incorrectly, it’ll clog again. We fix both the symptom and the cause.

The system won’t turn on at all. Before assuming the worst, check the remote batteries — it’s more common than anyone wants to admit, and there’s no shame in it. Beyond that, a non-responsive system usually points to a tripped breaker, a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units, or a failed control board. We’ll work through it systematically.

The system is running but not cooling or heating. Low refrigerant is the most common cause — a slow leak that built up over time until the system lost the charge it needs to do its job. Dirty coils, a failing compressor, or a reversing valve issue can produce the same symptom. The diagnosis tells you which one you’re dealing with.

Ice is forming on the indoor or outdoor unit. Usually a sign of restricted airflow from clogged filters, or low refrigerant forcing the system to work in conditions it can’t handle. Either way, running the system while it’s icing up makes the underlying problem worse.

Unusual noises or smells coming from the indoor unit. A grinding or rattling noise often means a fan motor bearing is failing. A musty smell usually means mold has built up inside the unit — common when filters haven’t been cleaned regularly. Both are fixable, and neither gets better on its own.

If This System Is Your Only Source of Heat or Cooling

For homes in New Hope, Doylestown, and the older boroughs of Bucks and Montgomery County — homes without ductwork where the mini-split IS the system — a failure is a genuine emergency. There’s no furnace to fall back on. No central air. Just the one unit. We run 24/7 emergency coverage. If your only system goes down in the middle of July or January, call us. We pick up.

Repair or Replace

Most mini-split problems are repairable. A refrigerant recharge, a drain line clear, a control board replacement — these are common fixes on systems that otherwise have years of life left. If the compressor has failed on an older unit, the math sometimes tips toward replacement instead. We’ll give you an honest assessment. If repair makes sense, we do it. If the system is past the point where repair is a good investment, we’ll tell you that and point you toward replacement options. We offer $0 down financing for qualified customers when that’s the direction you need to go. The best way to avoid this call is regular maintenance — filter cleaning every few months and an annual professional service visit. Filters that aren’t cleaned restrict airflow, force the system to work harder, and accelerate wear on components that are expensive to replace. Our maintenance plans include mini-split service and take the scheduling off your plate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my mini-split leaking water?
Almost always a clogged condensate drain. The system produces water as a byproduct of cooling, and when the drain path is blocked, it backs up and drips from the indoor unit. We clear the drain and evaluate the drainage routing to make sure it doesn't happen again.
How much does mini-split repair cost?
Minor repairs — drain line service, refrigerant recharge, filter cleaning — typically run a few hundred dollars. Control board replacements and more involved repairs run higher. We give you the number before any work starts.
Why is my mini-split not blowing cold air?
Usually low refrigerant from a slow leak, or dirty coils that are restricting heat transfer. A refrigerant issue won't resolve without finding and fixing the leak first — recharging without addressing the source just delays the problem. We diagnose the cause before recommending a fix.
